Jojoba oil is extracted from the jojoba plant—scientifically know as  Simmondsia Chinensis. The plant is found in Mexico, California and Arizona. 

The pure jojoba oil is bright golden in color. However, refined jojoba oil is colorless and odorless liquid. It does not contain triglycerides, that’s why chemically saying—it is rather a wax than oil.

Jojoba oil is used as an additive extensively in cosmetic and hair care products.

Unlike other vegetable oils such as grape seed oil and coconut oil, jojoba oil is relatively stable which makes it indispensable to use in products like shampoos, conditioners, lotions, moisturizers etc.

Benefits of  Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil has been used for over a long time and still dominates other oils due to its perfect results. Below are some benefits of using Jojoba oil.

  • Scalp moisturizer and cleaner: The health of the scalp determines the growth of your hair. Jojoba oil is closely similar to Sebum—a kind of oil secreted by Sebaceous glands present on scalp keeps the hair follicles active. Topical use acts as substitute giving similar or added benefits which in turn facilitates to the growth of hair.
  • Excess sebum clogs the hair follicles and prevents hair growth. Apart from keeping your scalp moist, jojoba oil cleans up the clogs, giving room for your hair to grow.
  • Antibacterial: Hair scalp often gets infected by bacteria or fungus infection and this leads to the follicles being destroyed. Jojoba oil acts as an antibacterial and heals the scalp from such kind of infections.

Everything that has pros obviously has some cons. Here are some of the negative effects associated with using jojoba oil.

  • Jojoba oil has an unpleasant nutty smell; though pure jojoba oil has no smell at all. If you are looking for results, then the smell should not be your big concern.
  • If used in excess, jojoba oil may not be healthy for your hair.  This is why you should always take precaution to use the right amount of jojoba oil.

How to Use Jojoba Oil

1. Mixed with shampoo or conditioner. You can mix jojoba oil with shampoo or conditioner. This will be easier because it comes in liquid form and you don’t have to melt it so as to use it.

2. Leave in treatment. This means applying some jojoba oil in your scalp before washing your hair. You mix the jojoba oil with the treatment and leave it on your hair for about 20-30 minutes before washing it out.

3. After shampooing.  This does not always work out for everyone; you should consider using the above methods before settling for this.  Jojoba oil has a high texture and using it might leave your hair greasy.
